InterPIG annual meeting
The last 18th, 19th and 20th of June, the annual InterPIG conference took place on Seinäjoki (Finland). On this meeting, the members of the different countries presented the 2023 production costs and factors.
On this occasion, Pedro Lopes, veterinarian and representative of SIP in Portugal, has joined the group providing the data of Portugal.
Spain continues being a leader in the European pig production:
The cost of production is similar to the average of the main pig producers’ countries of Europe (Denmark, Germany, Nederland and France).
And the price is one of the highest in Europe. As a result, the net margin too.
InterPIG is an international group of experts in the pig sector economy, whose objective is the exchange of technical and financial information. The main European countries in pig production form part of this global network, in addition to Brazil, the United States and Canada. SIP has been a member of InterPIG since 2006, providing Spanish data.
2023 Results - Spain
The global economic results of 2022 in Spain has been 35 c€7kg live weight.
The DataBase of SIP Consultors includes more than 1.300.000 sows in more than 240 companies throughout Spain.
Summary InterPIG 2022
The information from InterPIG 2022 shows that Spain maintains a better Result than the EU4 group (+11 c€/kg). The reason is a higher Sell price (+13,3 c€), that compensates the loss of competitivity in the Cost of production (-2,4 c€/kg).
In sell price, it remains a similar advantage than in 2021. However, the advantage of the last years in Production cost has been lost.
Compared with the USA, Spain has an important disadvantage in the Production cost (-27 c€/kg) and in the final Result (-29 c€/kg).
InterPIG annual meeting
The last 5th, 6th and 7th of June, the annual InterPIG conference took place on Ames (IA, USA). On this meeting, the different members presented the 2022 production costs and factors of the different countries.
On this occasion, the most important topic of the session was the animal welfare and the costs linked to the new European legislations.
The enforcement of PROP 12 in California was also a topic that generated a lot of debate.
After a difficult year for almost all the countries, Spain continues being the leader in European pig production.

2022 Results - Italy
The pig production cost elaborated from our DB information has been 1,93 €/kg for a pig of 173 kg liveweight.
The Database of SIP Consultors in Italy includes approximately 55.000 sows, in 13 companies.

The global economic results of 2022 in Spain elaborated from our DB information, has been negatives (-7 c€/kg):

IX SIP Meeting
The last 26th of January the IX SIP Meeting was held in Lleida (Palau de Congressos – La Llotja), organized every two years.
All the customers of the SIP Model were convened in this meeting and around 400 producers from Spain, Italy and Portugal attended it. On this occasion it also existed the possibility to follow the congress on streaming.
The reports that were presented on this edition were: 1) The swine sector in Spain, 2) International Benchmarking, 3) Fixed costs analysis, 4) Complementary tools and services, 5) Health challenge: an analysis of 4 PRRS cases, are there differences between geographic zones?, economic impact of the health deterioration, and an animal health expert point of view.
All the presentations were carried out by SIP members, except for An animal health expert point of view that was done by Lorenzo Fraile, doctor and professor at the University of Lleida.
The main source of information for the preparation of the reports is retrieved from the SIP database. It contains technical and economic information of farms from about 250 companies with 1,5 million productive sows.
